2007 Unit 202 Goodwill Award Winner
District 7 has honored Dorothy Russell as this year's Goodwill Award winner
at the Gatlinburg Regional. Dorothy is our current Unit President. After
retirement, Dorothy discovered bridge with a passion. For several years,
she has been Golden Isles Secretary and has co-chaired their Non Life Master
tournament. Dorothy self-studied to become a director and is particularly
devoted to introducing bridge to newcomers in the 49er game. Earlier this
year, Dorothy undertook the glamorous project of rewriting the Unit's bylaws.
She hopes to grow and enrich the game of bridge here in Unit 202.
Past award winners from Unit 202 are Jo Edwards, Tom Roush, Brent Anthony,
Veronica Ruggles and Betty Hoopes.

Golden Isles Duplicate Bridge Club Celebrates Founders' Day
A Founders' Day celebration was held on July 26, 2006 celebrating 47 years
of continuous bridge games by the Golden Isles Duplicate Bridge Club (GIDBC).
The first game was played in 1959 on a Thursday evening and that game is
still being played. The first sanction was obtained by Monk Edwards, and
his wife, Ann, still plays bridge (and wins) with the club.
Over 80 members attended the luncheon provided by contributions from the
newer members of the club to honor the founders whose efforts produced
the current debt free clubhouse. Years of fund raising, memorial gifts,
yard sales, etc. resulted in the opening of the clubhouse in January 2000.
Gourmet salads and champagne were happily consumed by all. The luncheon
was followed by a 14 table open bridge game where many of the newer members
stayed to play.

Several of our members attended the Raleigh "Memorial Day" Mid-Atlantic
Regional, May 23-29, 2006. There were 2,418 tables at the Regional and a total of 1,292 players. Out of the 1,204 players who won Masterpoints, 13 were from Unit 202.
