Unit 202 Winners at Hilton Head Mid-Atlantic Regional

Many of our members attended the Hilton Head Mid-Atlantic Regional, February 8-14, 2010. There were 3,634.5 tables at the Regional and a total of 1,852 players.  Out of the 1,696 players who won Masterpoints, 105 were from Unit 202.  Our players took home a total of 805.76 masterpoints, out of the 20,351.20 that were awarded.  The winners names are listed below. Lynn Pories “Retires” from directing Savannah Contract Bridge Club

Lynn will give up directing at this game as of the end of this Year. She will continue to direct at the Jewish Educational Alliance game, but says the modern technology being used by this club, which uses Bridgemate, a wireless electronic device to enter all of the scoring information at the table rather than someone entering it at the computer, has passed her by.  Lynn has been directing for 39 years, many of those at this club.  She has been chair or co-chair person at two regionals and numerous sectional tournaments held in Savannah.  She was also president of Georgia Coastal Unit 202 a couple of times and served on the board in other positions for many years. Besides these duties, Lynn has shown her bridge expertise, evidenced by her gold life master status.  The picture below was taken at the clubs annual Christmas party held December 8 at which she officially retired. She received the plaque to honor her in her retirement from the club for the many years of dedicated and faithful service.

 

Lynn will be missed as director of the club, but as stated earlier will continue to direct at another club and will continue to play at the club.  Shirley Vaughn, who has been sharing directing duties at the club along with Lynn, will continue to direct on a full time basis.

2007 Unit 202 Goodwill Award Winner
 
District 7 has honored Dorothy Russell as this year's Goodwill Award winner at the Gatlinburg Regional. Dorothy is our current Unit President. After retirement, Dorothy discovered bridge with a passion. For several years, she has been Golden Isles Secretary and has co-chaired their Non Life Master tournament. Dorothy self-studied to become a director and is particularly devoted to introducing bridge to newcomers in the 49er game. Earlier this year, Dorothy undertook the glamorous project of rewriting the Unit's bylaws. She hopes to grow and enrich the game of bridge here in Unit 202.

Golden Isles Duplicate Bridge Club Celebrates Founders' Day
 
A Founders' Day celebration was held on July 26, 2006 celebrating 47 years of continuous bridge games by the Golden Isles Duplicate Bridge Club (GIDBC). The first game was played in 1959 on a Thursday evening and that game is still being played. The first sanction was obtained by Monk Edwards, and his wife, Ann, still plays bridge (and wins) with the club.
 
Over 80 members attended the luncheon provided by contributions from the newer members of the club to honor the founders whose efforts produced the current debt free clubhouse. Years of fund raising, memorial gifts, yard sales, etc. resulted in the opening of the clubhouse in January 2000.
 
Gourmet salads and champagne were happily consumed by all. The luncheon was followed by a 14 table open bridge game where many of the newer members stayed to play.

Unit 202 Winners at Raleigh "Memorial Day" Mid-Atlantic Regional

Several of our members attended the Raleigh "Memorial Day" Mid-Atlantic Regional, May 23-29, 2006. There were 2,418 tables at the Regional and a total of 1,292 players.  Out of the 1,204 players who won Masterpoints,  13 were from Unit 202.  Our players took home a total of 100.74 masterpoints, out of the 16,199.32 that were awarded.  The winners names are listed below. Several of our members attended the Gatlinburg Smoky Mountain Mid-Atlantic Regional, April 17-23, 2006. There were 9,564 tables at the Regional and a total of 3,943 players.  Out of the 3,819 players who won Masterpoints,  35 were from Unit 202.  Our players took home a total of 422.19 masterpoints, out of the 72,482.39 that were awarded.  The winners names are listed below. Masterpoint Races - Mini-McKenney / Ace of Clubs

The ACBL website ( www.acbl.org ) now has "up-to-date" standings for both the yearly Mini-McKenney and Ace of Clubs masterpoint races for each unit and district posted.  Click here to check out the races for our unit.  These updates take place some time between the 6th and 10th of the month.
